Our Top Release of the Year: The Artist's Lux Claims the Number One Place.

Initially, Lux may look more like a difficult scholarly examination than the latest pop project from an artist who just had a last single featured an international K-pop icon. Broken into four separate movements and performed in thirteen languages, it is a head-spinning classical-tinged album that delves into feminine mystery, spiritual transcendence, and bodily transformation, frequently through the perspective of various female saints. The end of a love affair—a topic treated with raw openness on another major 2025 album—is launched heavenward on this record, carried by the constant sound of a full orchestra and contributions from a Pulitzer-winning composer within a long roll call of collaborators. Its sheer daring alone renders the work of other artists seem quite small.

Transcending Academic Exercise

That Lux succeeds in transcend dry intellectual posturing feels nothing short of a miracle, and complete praise going to Rosalía. While it's not the first time album to fuse the past and modern styles, the scale feel much higher on Lux, and the balancing act more pronounced. What truly raises this fourth release, outside of its complex tunes, rich compositions, and engrained drama, is an essential sense of fun. Much like the iconic artist at her peak, there is a wondrous quality to the vocalist's voice which sweeps you up in its tornado. When she is tearing hearts in two, you still desire to stay right there for the ride.

A Prime Moment of Joy

This exuberant spirit shines clearly during a stunning Italian song inspired by Saint Clare. It bathes in a string-drenched melancholy over several moments. Suddenly, all the music falls silent, to reveal there's a spontaneous giggle followed by a comment prior to a comically over-the-top orchestral crescendo crashes down like comedic impact. The track immediately shifts to the frenetic track featuring racing orchestration, an imposing choral group, and a cameo appearance from the artist herself.

"The magic with Lux lies in you never exactly know—nor wish to know—where you is going to next."

Nearly each song concludes at a completely different place than how it began. A track explores the fleeting nature of celebrity with a featherlight symphony only to disintegrating in electronic cacophony. Elsewhere, a cut that recalls her earlier rhythmic style begins off dark and brooding, with prowling beats, before sudden traditional rhythms and a heavenly choir enter to smooth the song's rough edges.

The Bridge Between Experiment & Accessibility

A key achievement on the album is straddling the line of bold innovation and mainstream appeal. It is no coincidence that the album has achieved the artist's highest-charting release to break into the upper reaches of key charts: at its core a collection of truly catchy hits. One track performed primarily in the English language builds on a refrain that seems to collect more and more infectious melodies as it spins upward. This trick is repeated by another powerful track that expands and constricts, weaving multiple tunes as an intricate weave.

  • A dance-infused song seduces with its jaunty, theatrical flair and a chant-along chorus.
  • In its words, it shares with cultural honesty of contemporary breakup anthems, lambasting an ex- lover described as an "psychological bully".
  • Across these tracks, the singing have a painted-on smile, like a storybook character hiding a blade: "Top prize in acting like a scoundrel / You have won the trophy of disappointment."

An Opulent Banquet for the Soul

Lux represents pop on a grand scale, a hungry reach for high Art amid of impending artificial sameness. It rejects solipsism for glorious elevation, crafting an over-the-top spectacle that skillfully manages its built-in ridiculousness. It is a deep source of buried treasure that takes time to completely mine but doesn't feels like a chore. Where other major releases of the year felt like feasting on scraps, Lux is a sumptuous feast where the guests at the table, perhaps tipsy on sacred wine, flutter from discussions about historical figures, the galvanizing sensation of soul-shattering grief, and shared gossip about hopeless men. It is a contemporary theatrical production from pop's most restlessly inventive visionary.
