The Iconic Puzzle Game Wouldn't Win at The Game Awards — A New Category Could Fix That

Whenever a major prize-giving event nears, you'll find an outcry for the addition additional classifications to honor unsung work and delight the hearts of enthusiasts with niche passions.

A fellow writer made the case for a horror game category. That would rule. So would board games, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. Yet I need to apologize in advance if I try to elbow in front since similar to single-minded supporters, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand remains most pressing and important of all. Here's the proposal: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Organizing artistic expressions defies precise measurement; it’s very subjective, and it will always generate discussions concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that cinema institutions avoid this approach. But it is an unavoidable compromise in the world of gaming, showing incredible range it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to gain proper attention, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, specific award classifications remain vital.

Current Gaming Award Categories

The major gaming awards currently feature classifications covering Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these award types actually cover numerous genres, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.

Not so for logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, all very different: building puzzles of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles of a third title. Where could they possibly go within current classifications? Simply put, no category fits.

Acknowledgment Issues

There are dozens excellent brain-teasers published annually without proper recognition at major award shows, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested Indie races.

  • A renowned logic title wasn’t nominated in any category that year
  • A different innovative game missed out during that ceremony
  • Popular arranging title received no acknowledgment in 2021
  • Just some brain-teasers scraped into independent or mobile categories

Importance of Logic Titles

These are often small games, yet the craft of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Iconic mobile puzzle games stand as most popular titles worldwide and have been for many years.

The famous puzzle experience competes with famous sandbox experiences claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it additionally competes for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation with almost every other genre.

Proposal and Rationale

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter such difficulty. You could fill five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.

And to reiterate, these represent titles that otherwise have no home during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers operate at the challenging frontier game development, creating some of the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Just like film action specialists, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait generations.
