Together Can Be Streamed, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Relationship.

Consider this a dare for long-term couples who are fans of the horror genre: Settle in with your significant other and stream Together. This critically acclaimed 2025 movie has now made its launch on a streaming platform via Hulu. On the surface, it may seem like conventional biological terror, but beneath Together lies a intense contemplation about our choices in loving one another.

An Introductory Film Exploring Partnership Complexities

Together represents the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It stars actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Tim and Millie, partners that have been together for ten years. United in marriage in reality in 2017, Franco and Brie contribute a unique chemistry to their roles, expertly portraying both the good and bad of a committed partnership.

The narrative begins when Tim and Millie relocate from the urban environment to the country for Millie’s job. A somewhat stereotypical plot device, admittedly, but that’s mostly where the tropes end. Together transforms into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the partnership as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While hiking near their country house, a violent storm occurs, and the two discover an hole in the earth. After being trapped overnight there and managing to escape, a supernatural entity starts to affect the couple. This force creates a supernatural closeness between them that goes exceeding typical partnership.

The complete narrative is a methodically building of scares, blending bits of dreamlike terrors, unsettling (but tastefully done) physical transformations, and genuinely funny dialogue (sometimes during something disturbing). Michael Shanks orchestrates these parts neatly and delivers them in a slowly mounting atmosphere of fear.

Nuanced Portrayals

A significant portion of Together is solely the two lead actors, and they deftly portray manifold depths to the characters’ relationship. Millie's sense of self and emotional bond is waning due to a distance. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his unwillingness to chase only his floundering music career gradually emerges.

Conversely, Tim senses confinement and separated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve moved to the country and distant from his network of friends. He dreads the idea of utterly sacrificing his personal autonomy in Millie. This fear is further exacerbated by the circumstance he lacks a driver's license and needs Millie for getting around.

The film's most intelligent aspect in this movie refrains from painting one partner or the other the clear bad guy.

The couple face the kind of problems that are inherent in any relationship over a long period. Deep down, they still love one another. They still laugh together, offer support, and share intimately at times. But under the surface, there’s an persistent undercurrent of doubt about their relationship.

Allegory and Meaning

While the paranormal elements in Together act as a metaphor for these fears of codependency and giving oneself over to a partner, the symbolism does not come across as overly obvious or heavy-handed. Instead, these visceral horror elements provide a ideal counterpart to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the horror and the drama work together in harmony.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s conclusion, which is best experienced firsthand, has sparked debate on the movie's final takeaway about codependent relationships. Accounts suggest that those not in relationships have interpreted the film as a compelling reason for avoiding commitment. Meanwhile, a few pairs having disagreements found that the film ended up guiding them to resolve their issues.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own interpretation could function as a revealing measure of how you think about commitment. Will the conclusion sow feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you see yourself in either protagonist and feel frustration, or simply look at your significant other and state, “We could get through that together”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an exploration you can undertake at this very moment.

Together is currently playing on Hulu's platform as of this moment.
